  4.     Much like a strong presidential ticket, covering the White
  5. House for TIME requires teamwork, indefatigable energy and more
  6. than a dollop of personal chemistry. Which brings us to
  7. Washington correspondents Michael Duffy and Dan Goodgame -- the
  8. Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid of the presidential beat -- who
  9. have been covering the Bush Administration together since
  10. Inauguration Day 1989. At first glance, they are, well,
  11. different from each other: the voluble, wisecracking Duffy is
  12. the inside-the-Beltway political junkie, while Goodgame, a
  13. Mississippi native and Rhodes scholar, is the laid-back
  14. outsider, always searching for the Big Picture.

  16.     Duffy and Goodgame were not immune to the primary
  17. occupational hazard of the White House beat: frustration with
  18. the steady diet of manufactured events. Amid the tedium of 1989,
  19. Duffy recalls, "we discovered that Bush was popular not despite
  20. his lack of action but because of it -- and what's more, we
  21. learned it was largely by design." From this insight grew the
  22. ultimate Duffy-Goodgame collaboration, their book chronicling
  23. Bush's first term, Marching in Place, just published by Simon
  24. & Schuster and excerpted in this preconvention issue.

  26.     Collaborating on a book enhanced the week-to-week
  27. journalism of Duffy and Goodgame. Explains Goodgame: "It forced
  28. us to work far more closely together, sharing every detail,
  29. every interview, every hunch with each other." Working so
  30. closely also pointed up the odd-couple nature of the
  31. Duffy-Goodgame relationship. Duffy likes to write early and,
  32. when circumstances permit, quit early for a gourmet dinner like
  33. take-out pizza. In contrast, Goodgame does his best writing late
  34. at night, often after downing several bowls of his homemade
  35. seafood gumbo.

  37.     Fostering in-house book writers is a long TIME tradition.
  38. Assistant managing editor Walter Isaacson is the author of
  39. Kissinger: A Biography, which will be published by Simon &
  40. Schuster next month. Isaacson says, "Henry Kissinger was very
  41. generous in the time and access he gave me. But it's not an
  42. authorized biography, and indeed it's quite critical in places."
  43. This fall TIME reporter David Seideman will examine the
  44. spotted-owl environmental controversy in his forthcoming book
  45. Showdown at Opal Creek. Not all TIME authors compose weighty
  46. public-policy tomes. On a lighter note, senior writer William
  47. A. Henry III recently published The Great One: The Life and
  48. Legend of Jackie Gleason. And away we go.
